Earth Hour: Lights at Prambanan and Borobudur Temples Turned Off

Prambanan and Borobudur Temples will be the center of Earth Hour 2016 activities. This activity is marked by turning off lights and electronic devices for one hour, namely from 8:30-9:30 p.m. local time.

The electricity cost for Prambanan Temple's lights is Rp 750 per hour. The lights at Prambanan are turned on three times a week for two hours.

The celebration culminates only at Borobudur Temple, featuring various performances, while at Prambanan, the lights are turned off. Earth Hour was first observed in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Indonesia initiated the event in 2009, and Yogyakarta followed in 2010, along with four other regions. In 2015, 1,5 billion people worldwide participated in the movement, while in 2014, 1,5 million people participated in Indonesia.

In addition to Borobudur and Prambanan Temples, 37 cities have registered to participate in this movement, holding events at 70 landmarks in their respective cities or regions, such as city centers or city monuments. The symbolic one-hour power outage is expected to demonstrate a concrete commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
