Ancient Musical Instruments at Sound of Borobudur 2016

A fascinating aspect of Sound of Borobudur is the presence of replicas of stringed instruments identical to those depicted on the Karmawibhangga reliefs of Borobudur Temple. These replicas have been successfully crafted and played by cultural activists.

Since 824 AD, during the inauguration of Borobudur Temple, the Karmawibhangga relief panel clearly depicts several people playing very distinctive musical instruments. The instruments are stringed and plucked with the fingers. There are three images of stringed instruments. And there are two images of wind instruments that have very distinctive shapes. In addition, there is also a musical instrument like a flute. Both types of musical instruments are not similar to musical instruments from India, Thailand and the surrounding area. The similarity of stringed and wind instruments can be found in the Dayak village of Kalimantan. The stringed type is called Sapèk and the wind type is called Keledi.

The musical instrument was remade exactly as it appears in the relief by Ali Gardy, a player and string maker from Langai village, Situbondo.
