Bank Jateng Borobudur Marathon 2017
Borobudur, November 19, 2017 – The 2017 Bank Jateng Borobudur Marathon (BJBM 2017) has concluded. Participants competed in three categories: the 10K, half marathon, and full marathon. The event attracted not only residents of Central Java but also runners and enthusiasts from around the world.
The cloudy weather and occasional rain did not hinder the enthusiasm of the participants to run to enjoy the charm of the magnificent Borobudur Temple. Proven by the start of the race by the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo, who was on time for the full marathon category at 05.00 WIB and followed by the start of the race in the next category, namely the half marathon and ended with the 10K category. Also present at the start of the runners were the Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia Mr. Imam Nahrawi, the Regent of Magelang Regency Mr. Zaenal Arifin, the Director of Marketing and Services of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko Mr. Ricky SP Siahaan, etc.
In this edition, participants were treated to a variety of beautiful scenery along the route. Traversing through villages, participants were able to greet local residents and capture interesting scenic spots for selfies. Furthermore, along the route, participants received full support from local residents, who presented various traditional Central Javanese arts. More than 15 villages passed through by runners participated in this series, presenting these artistic performances. Not only adults but also schoolchildren from the villages passed through also participated in this series.
In addition to the support from local residents along the route, participants and visitors to the race village who had finished were also invited to join in a Zumba dance cool-down program. Participants were also entertained by a performance by singer Andien, who performed her popular songs.
A total of 8.754 participants attended and competed in the 2017 BJBM, which also came from 26 participating countries besides Indonesia. In this race, Kiprop Tonui, a runner from Kenya, won the full marathon open category for men with a time of 2 hours 26 minutes 20 seconds. Followed by Kennedy Kiproo Lilan and Cosmas Matolo, both of whom also came from Kenya. The full marathon closed category winner was Hamdan Syafril Sayuti with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes 40 seconds. Followed by Asma Bara and Rudi Febriade.
The women's open full marathon was won by Elizabeth Rumokol Chekakan of Kenya with a time of 2 hours, 43 minutes, and 14 seconds. Peninah Jepkoech of Kenya and Chemutai Immaculate of Uganda followed. Olivia Sadi won the closed full marathon with a time of 3 hours, 10 minutes, and 42 seconds.
Followed by Irma Handayani and Maya. The full marathon master closed category for men was won by Suyono with a time of 3 hours, 5 minutes, and 24 seconds. Heri Poriono and Abdul Manan followed. Helda Napitupulu won the full marathon master closed category for women with a time of 3 hours, 41 minutes, and 2 seconds. Siti Muawanah and Darwati followed.
Meanwhile, the men's open half marathon category was won by Josphat Kiptanui Too of Kenya with a time of 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 42 seconds. He was followed by Barnaba Sigei of Malaysia and Joseph Mwangi Ngare of Kenya. The men's closed half marathon category was won by national runner Agus Prayogo with a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 3 seconds. He was followed by Nurshodiq and Difta Ibrula Gratina Unbanu.
The women's open half marathon was won by Rosemary Mumo Katua of Kenya with a time of 1 hour, 13 minutes, 46 seconds. She was followed by Kipsanai Naomi Jepkorir and Too Mercy Jelimo. The close half marathon was won by Afriana Pajio with a time of 1 hour, 22 minutes, 59 seconds. She was followed by Odekta Elvina Naibaho and Ferly Marince Subnafeu.
The 10K open men's category was won by Tariku Demelash from Ethiopia with a time of 29 minutes 20 seconds. Followed by Gachui Daniel Kiarie and Gilbert Ngench, both from Kenya. The 10K closed men's category was won by Tio Purwanto with a time of 31 minutes 53 seconds. Followed by Ridwan and Jauhari Johan. The 10K open women's category was won by Edinah Jeruto Koech from Kenya with a time of 35 minutes 13 seconds, followed by Monica Watelu Ndiritu and Cynthia Chelangat Towett. Finally, the 10K closed women's category was won by Yulianingsih with a time of 38 minutes 15 seconds, followed by Meri M Paijo and Bayu Trianata Sari.
The conclusion of the 2017 BJBM is expected to have a significant impact on the economy and tourism in Central Java. The organizers are also committed to continuously improving the quality of the event so that it can compete with world-class marathons.
