TWC Processes Waste in Tourist Destinations to Support Sustainable Tourism

The revival of the tourism sector post-pandemic is expected to be the right moment to encourage the implementation of the concept of sustainable tourism. This concept was raised as a solution to align economic, socio-cultural, and environmental sustainability aspects in tourist destinations, including aspects of responsible waste management.

PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko (TWC) manages waste at the TWC Borobudur and TWC Prambanan destinations, namely by processing organic waste into organic fertilizer.

TWC Marketing & Sales Vice President, Pujo Suwarno said that the waste management program at the TWC Borobudur and TWC Prambanan tourist destinations is one of TWC's efforts to reduce the pile of waste and is part of waste management, namely to change waste into something more useful.

"Handling the issue of waste management in tourist destinations is a shared responsibility. Collaboration between the government, tourism actors, waste management, the community, and even tourists. Let's start changing the mindset that this waste can still be utilized and processed into valuable items," said TWC Marketing and Sales Vice President Pujo Suwarno, at the TWC Head Office, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Monday (4/4/2022).

TWC has started processing organic waste into organic fertilizer routinely and sustainably at the TWC Borobudur and TWC Prambanan destinations. The place for processing organic waste into organic fertilizer is in the Parks Office area, TWC Borobudur and TWC Prambanan Complexes.

"The organic fertilizer that we produce has been distributed to be sold to the public, especially farmers, at a selling price that is certainly still very affordable for the public. For inorganic waste such as plastic waste, we have just designed a management program to become more useful goods, and the activities involve tourists. In addition to being sold for the needs of the community, the organic fertilizer produced is also used to meet the needs of gardening in both destinations," concluded Pujo Suwarno.
