Thousands of Buddhists Follow Waisak Moments in Borobudur Temple Yard

A total of 1.200 Buddhists follow the Waisak moments in the courtyard of Borobudur Temple, Magelang, Central Java, Monday (16/5/2022). Under the hot sun, the congregation follows the Waisak moments with meditation led by Monk Wongsin Labhiko Mahathera and the beating of the gong three times.

Walubi General Chairperson Hartati Murdaya said that the theme of Waisak 2566 BE is the Path of Wisdom to True Happiness, meaning a life filled with ego so that humans are always trapped in quarrels.

"Humans need to feel the joy of living a life full of patience and gain the power of wisdom that is useful for others, be compassionate, and become a useful person," he explained.

Permabudhi General Chairman Philip K. Widjaja said, this year's Waisak was held after a long Covid-19 pandemic. The congregation can now meet again at the magnificent Borobudur Temple.

"Walubi has worked hard to make this event happen and invite Permabudhi together to be able to enjoy the joy of Waisak, to enjoy the happiness of Waisak," said Philip K. Widjaja.

Deputy Minister of Religion Zainut Tauhid Sa'adi said the commemoration of the Tri Suci Waisak was the right momentum for Buddhists throughout the world to remember the three sacred events in the life of Gautama Buddha.

"On behalf of the Indonesian government, we wish you a Happy Tri Suci Waisak Day, may the blessings of enlightenment and wisdom adorn our lives together," said Zainut.

Monk Wongsin Labhiko Mahatera said he was happy because the celebration of the Tri Suci Waisak this year could be held again face-to-face at Borobudur Temple. "This is just a mini Waisak, not full. However, tonight there are still prayers and lantern releases," he said.

One of the Buddhists who attended the Waisak service at Borobudur Temple, Elia (40 years old) admitted that he was very happy and moved because he could again attend the Tri Suci Waisak procession face-to-face at Borobudur Temple.

"The term is this is a special moment on the Tri Suci Waisak Day and we can gather again at Borobudur Temple after a two-year hiatus," said the woman from Jakarta.
