Innovative Islamic Boarding School: Encourage Student Independence, Support Economic Recovery

Efforts to improve the quality of learning that encourages student independence need support from all parties. Educators need to implement learning that encourages student innovation to spur ability and independence. While other stakeholders support with programs that support the implementation of these values.

PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko through the Environmental Social Responsibility (TJSL) program is committed to helping develop the values ​​of student independence through the “Innovative Islamic Boarding School” mentoring program. This mentoring program for Islamic boarding school students in Yogyakarta aims to assist students in applying the knowledge gained in school and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and having an independent and sustainable business.

Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Mardijono Nugroho together with Corporate Secretary AY Suhartanto, Head of SPI PT TWC Aryono Hendro Malyanto and Plt TJSL & SME Founding Manager Ismiyati directly handed over business grant assistance worth 65 million rupiah to two groups of students from the Al-Hakim Islamic Boarding School, MAN I Yogyakarta, and the Al Ikhlas Berbah Islamic Boarding School, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Wednesday (27/7/2022).

The business grant funds will be provided to develop a t-shirt and mug screen printing business at the Al Ikhlas Berbah Islamic Boarding School as well as a laundry and printing business at the Al-Hakim Islamic Boarding School, Yogyakarta. The TJSL TWC flagship program in 2022 also includes mentoring and coaching for entrepreneurs which will run for 6 months, from July to December 2022. 

"Innovative Islamic Boarding School is a sustainable development program that we started in 2020 through the Innovative Student Program and the Innovative Student Program in 2021. This agenda is in accordance with the Social Development Pillar of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to foster quality education and the Economic Development Pillar of the SDGs which encourages the creation of decent work that drives economic growth," explained Ismiyati.

MAN 1 Yogyakarta Principal Wiranto Prasetyahadi appreciated PT TWC's steps through this Innovative Islamic Boarding School program. According to him, in the midst of the challenges of the era that continue to develop, students need guidance and support to develop their abilities, so that they can be independent and competitive.

"A program like this has never existed before, but later on, children will need this ability. In principle, the principle of independence needs to be instilled from an early age. We have high hopes that this program can continue to develop and be useful for students in the future," he said.

One of the students of Al-Hakim Yogyakarta, Fauzan Kurnia Zain, along with four members of his group, wants to develop a laundry and printing business for his boarding school. According to him, this business is in accordance with the vital needs of the boarding school and school residents.

"This business is a solution for boarding school residents who sometimes have difficulty traveling outside the boarding school," explained this class XII Man I Yogyakarta student.

One of the Al Ikhlas students, Muhammad Fatkhul Anwar, said that the business funds he received would later be used to purchase equipment to support his business.

"Equipment such as printers, screen printing tools that we do not have yet. While computers are already supported by the boarding school," explained the student who has product design skills.

Meanwhile, Director of Engineering and Infrastructure of PT TWC Mardijono Nugroho gave encouragement and support to the students who received grant funds through this strict assessment. He also invited the Islamic boarding school to always accompany the students to manage and develop their businesses.

"I think this needs to be monitored continuously. Everything is assessed with clear standards and parameters, then later it can be evaluated and become input for future business development," he concluded.
