IDM Participation in COP29 Forum Promotes Climate Change Mitigation Through Sustainable Tourism

PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko (TWC) attended the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties (COP 29) forum as a speaker, held in Baku, Azerbaijan (16/11/2024). This forum raised the theme Green World, Intergenerational Climate Action as part of the annual UN Climate Change Conference.

At this world-class forum, PT TWC President Director Febrina Intan raised the issue of "Heritage Sites and Action for Climate Empowerment” which aims to strengthen climate change mitigation actions through the preservation of cultural heritage sites, with a focus on the role of the Taman Wisata Candi (TWC) and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) destinations in supporting efforts to reduce the impact of global climate change.

PT TWC's policy of caring about environmental issues is packaged through the Stupa program or Sustainable Tourism & Unified Preservation Action. Stupa is an integrated approach program towards sustainability and preservation of tourism and empowerment of local communities.

As the manager of world heritage sites such as Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple, PT TWC is committed to integrating sustainability into tourism destination management. PT TWC presents a world-class tourism experience that connects Indonesia's past, present, and future, while preserving culture and the environment.

Some of the sustainability initiatives carried out by PT TWC include waste management, sustainable mobility and carbon reduction as well as community involvement in environmental conservation.

PT TWC manages around 3 tons of waste per day, consisting of 92% organic waste and 8% non-organic waste by presenting the Edu-Kriya program which aims to educate visitors in processing non-organic waste into art products. In addition, PT TWC collaborates with four surrounding villages to support the program Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

PT TWC implements the concept of a carbon-emission vehicle-free zone in Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple, each with an area of ​​71 hectares and 85 hectares, and uses electric vehicles for operational purposes of tourist services. In TMII, 70% of the area is used for green open space, as well as various carbon reduction efforts through tree planting and the use of clean energy.

PT TWC also actively involves local communities in conservation and natural resource management efforts. Through partnerships with local communities, TWC empowers communities to be part of the climate change solution.

The COP29 forum is expected to enhance cross-sector collaboration between government, private sector, academics, and civil society organizations, as well as become a platform for sharing knowledge on emission reduction and climate change policies. By participating in this forum, PT TWC demonstrates Indonesia's active role in facing the challenges of climate change through the preservation of sustainable cultural heritage.

As part of the global community, PT TWC hopes to share experiences on how sustainable tourism destination management can support nature conservation and cultural heritage preservation for future generations, while also raising awareness of the importance of reducing carbon emissions.
