Prambanan Temple Area Closed to Commemorate Nyepi Day, Saka Year 1947

The Prambanan Temple Tourism Park Complex will be closed to tourists on Saturday, March 29, 2025, in conjunction with the commemoration of the Holy Day of Nyepi, Saka New Year 1947.

"This is the third year, where Nyepi is tomorrow, March 29, the entire Prambanan area will be closed, to respect those who will do Nyepi. Prambanan Temple Tourism Park will only reopen on Sunday, March 30, 2025," said General Manager of Prambanan and Ratu Boko, Ratno Timur in his statement, Saturday, March 29, 2025.

PT TWC closed the operational activities of the Prambanan Temple Tourism Park destination during the Nyepi Holy Day 1946. This operational closure was carried out on March 29, 2025 starting at 06.00 WIB to 24.00 WIB.

In addition, the Prambanan TWC destination will have a power outage from 06.00 WIB on March 29, 2025 to 06.00 WIB on March 30, 2025. During the closure of the destination, the Prambanan Temple Tourism Park area will be guarded by bregada soldiers and Turangga troops, namely mounted police troops from the Yogyakarta Regional Police.

The Tawur Agung Kesanga Ceremony is part of a series of Eid celebrations Nyepi Saka Year 1947 falls on March 29 2025. This ritual aims to purify the universe and maintain balance between humans, nature and the gods. 

The procession begins with the Mendak Tirta and Pradaksina ceremonies in the Prambanan Temple area, followed by traditional art performances, and the Ogoh-ogoh Parade which involves a procession of giant statues accompanied by baleganjur music and penjor decorations.

Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka assessed the location of the Tawur Agung Kesanga celebration held at Prambanan Temple adjacent to Sewu Temple, the second largest Buddhist temple complex after Borobudur Temple, as a positive thing. According to him, the selection of this celebration location is a symbol of tolerance between religious communities.

"The Prambanan Temple is so beautiful and lush, which is located next to the Sewu Temple as one of the symbols of tolerance between religious communities. This year Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr fall on close dates. We need to continue to strengthen tolerance and respect for differences," he explained.

GM Prambanan and Ratu Boko Ratno Timur said that this closing is a form of respect and instills a sense of togetherness and deep attachment to Hindus throughout Indonesia who are carrying out the Catur Brata Penyepian. 

"Although we have entered the Eid moment and there has been an increase in visits, we are still closing the Prambanan Temple Tourism Park destination. This is a form of our commitment to respecting and preserving the Prambanan Temple World Cultural Heritage site which is also respected as a holy site for Hindus in Indonesia and the world," he concluded.
