You can climb Borobudur Temple every day.
InJourney Destination Management, in coordination with the Borobudur Museum and Cultural Heritage, opens access to Borobudur Temple every day.
The policy of visiting Borobudur Temple will begin in the third week of July 2025. Previously, every Monday, visits to Borobudur Temple were limited to school and high school students only.
"There are no longer any restrictions on the day, tourists are allowed to climb to the top of the temple every day," said Director of PT Taman Wisata Borobudur (TWB) Mardijono Nugroho, Tuesday (22/7).
Mardijono stated that Borobudur management has obtained official permission from the Museum and Cultural Heritage (MCB). He hopes this will have a significant impact on the economic development of the Borobudur community.
He acknowledged that Mondays are often quiet because temple visits are closed, coinciding with the museum's holiday. He hopes this permit will boost economic growth in the Borobudur and Magelang areas as a whole.
It is believed that opening the temple on Mondays can reduce the tourist stagnation that usually occurs at the beginning of the week.
This policy was enthusiastically received by tourists. He noted that the number of visitors, which was usually low on Mondays, had increased significantly, reaching 3.000 to 4.000 people.
However, he did not mention the exact number of tourist visits to Borobudur Temple.
"Thank God, tourists are enthusiastic. This is encouraging news. Usually, there are few visitors on Mondays, but today there were many," he said.
Mardijono said that this opening was still a trial and his party would continue to promote it.
Despite the expanded visitation, the management is fully committed to preserving Borobudur Temple. All visitors are still required to wear upanat, or special footwear, to protect the temple's structure from wear and tear.
Mardijono stated that this decision isn't simply an opening or closing decision, but part of tourism development that respects cultural, spiritual, and conservation aspects. Tickets can still be purchased online and offline.
Regarding the temple's entry quota, Mardijono stated that trials are currently underway to find the ideal balance between preservation and optimizing visits. Several parties, including the Magelang Regent, have proposed opening the temple to 5.000 to 10.000 visitors per day. To confirm this, his office is continuing its studies.
He acknowledged that the Monday reopening policy has provided a breath of fresh air for tourism operators, local guides, MSMEs, and homestay operators in the area. After experiencing a lull during the pandemic and conservation restrictions, tourism operators are now experiencing a positive upsurge.
