Borobudur Playon Strengthens Sports-Based Tourism Potential

Thousands of runners crowded the Lumbini field in the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park complex to take part in the Rupiah Borobudur Playon (RBP) 2025 on Sunday (July 27, 7). The annual event, held by Bank Indonesia, Central Java Province, and the Central Java Provincial Government, prioritizes an educational mission to strengthen public literacy regarding digital payments and consumer protection, support the empowerment of MSMEs, the development of sports tourism, and promote tourism in the Borobudur area.

Four thousand runners from various regions participated in the 2025 Rupiah Borobudur Playon. This year, 2800 runners covered a 5-kilometer rural route along Borobudur, while 1.200 covered a 10-kilometer route.

Central Java Provincial Assistant Sujarwanto Dwiatmoko stated that this activity is expected to improve the community's economy and reduce poverty. With collaborative efforts and support from the banking sector, Central Java's economy will continue to grow, particularly through the tourism sector, which contributes to regional revenue.

"I thank Bank Indonesia for its consistent efforts in stimulating economic activity and encouraging banks to actively provide financing," he said.

The Regional Secretary of Central Java Province, Sumarno, emphasized that the running competition in the context of sports tourism or Sports Tourism not only functions for physical fitness, but also to encourage economic growth in the community.

"The Central Java Provincial Government continues to strive for economic growth through sports tourism events. One strategy is to develop the potential of the agglomeration of several former residencies in Central Java," added Sumarno. He explained that sports tourism events are considered the most effective way to attract visitors, as participants typically book accommodations, shop, and enjoy local cuisine.

The educational and inspirational program, which began in 2023, was initially attended by 2.000 runners, then in 2024 it was attended by 3.500 runners, and in 2025 it increased again to more than 4.000 runners, consisting of 1.200 runners for the 10Km distance and more than 2800 runners for the 5Km distance.

Head of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office (KPwBI) for Central Java Province, Rahmat Dwisaputa, said that the RBP had become an annual event and was included in the agenda. According to Rahmat, the trade, hotel, and restaurant sectors contributed approximately Rp 5 billion in revenue to the event last year. He believes that figure will increase to Rp 7 billion this year due to the increase in participants and the number of tourism events held.

"RBP is able to attract thousands of runners to come to Borobudur. The presence of Ara, a runner and his family, is certainly able to stimulate the economy in Central Java, because of the many culinary delights that participate, so that the economy continues to move," explained Rahmat Dwisaputra.
