To Realize Culture-Based Tourism, InJourney and the Ministry of Culture Collaborate to Manage the Borobudur Temple Complex

PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (Persero) or InJourney signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia

concerning the management of the Borobudur Temple complex to realize Borobudur as a culturally based spiritual tourism destination. This memorandum of understanding covers the management of the Borobudur Temple Complex, human resources and/or management cooperation, and the exchange of data and information.

This collaboration is not just an administrative momentum, but is a real step in realizing the grand vision of managing Borobudur Temple in an integrated manner, an approach

to strengthen PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko or InJourney Destination Management as a subsidiary of InJourney as the Single Destination Management for the management of the Borobudur temple complex.

The signing was carried out at Wisma Danantara Indonesia (30/07) between Restu Gunawan as Director General of Cultural and Tradition Protection of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia and Maya Watono as President Director of InJourney and witnessed directly by the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Fadli Zon, CEO of PT Danantara Asset Management (Persero) Dony Oskaria, and President Director of InJourney Destination Management Febrina Intan.

"This momentum is an excellent opportunity to realize the spirit of culture in the management of the Borobudur Temple complex as an Indonesian cultural site. As a cultural and tourism destination capable of stimulating the economy of the surrounding community, the arrangements carried out by InJourney, such as managing the flow of visitors and the development of the Borobudur Art Village, are on the right track. Hopefully, through these steps, we can organize Borobudur more progressively and provide broader benefits for all parties, especially by providing facilities that support all groups to enjoy Borobudur and encourage inclusivity," said Fadli Zon, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia.

On the same occasion, PT Danantara Asset Management (Persero) CEO Dony Oskaria emphasized that Borobudur Temple is one of Indonesia's main tourism attractions. Through InJourney, tourism promotion continues to be strengthened, including by opening connectivity between Bangkok and Yogyakarta through a familiarization trip program involving 250 travel agents to directly explore and introduce Joglosemar's tourism potential, particularly Borobudur Temple.

"The management of strategic destinations like Borobudur Temple is now geared toward not only creating economic value but also providing tangible benefits to the surrounding community. InJourney's performance parameters have been established to prioritize social welfare and local impact. This is part of our efforts to build sustainable, inclusive, and long-term destination governance. We welcome the synergy with the Ministry of Culture, which is strengthening cross-agency collaboration through the implementation of single authority management, to ensure the management of leading destinations is integrated, effective, and accountable," said Dony.

Through this collaborative mechanism, the Ministry of Culture, through the Borobudur Temple Museum, can optimally fulfill its cultural and preservation functions. At the same time, InJourney Destination Management can fulfill its role as a tourism facilitator, prioritizing educational value and authentic experiences. Meanwhile, the public, as cultural enthusiasts, will experience tangible benefits from open access, improved service quality, and more equitable economic impact.

"We appreciate the open dialogue that has resulted in a collaborative scheme, reflecting shared aspirations and synergy across entities. Through close collaboration, we are working together to realize Borobudur as a tourism destination that is not only spiritual and culturally based, but also a tangible manifestation of the nation's rich heritage that can be enjoyed and preserved sustainably," said InJourney President Director Maya Watono.

This collaboration marks InJourney's role as a state-owned enterprise holding company for aviation and tourism, and the Indonesian Ministry of Culture's role as guardian of the historical, cultural, and spiritual values of Borobudur Temple. This collaboration is expected to develop Borobudur not only as a tourist destination but also as a culturally vibrant space, where preservation and utilization go hand in hand.

"We recognize that integration is not just about operations; it's about collective responsibility for world heritage, history, and the future of future generations. The various cultural-based programs and activities conducted at the Borobudur Temple complex have had a positive impact on the surrounding community. We've recorded a 5,6% year-on-year growth in the surrounding community," added Maya Watono.

InJourney, through InJourney Destination Management, offers a variety of culture-based activities designed to provide unforgettable experiences for every visitor. One special moment offered is the opportunity to witness the beauty of the sunrise over Borobudur at 4 a.m. through the "Borobudur Sunrise" program, a spiritual experience capable of instilling profound peace and awe.

In addition, various other programs are also prepared to enrich the visitor journey, creating meaningful moments that invite everyone to enjoy the Borobudur Temple complex in a more in-depth and authentic way, making the visit not just a tourist attraction, but a journey of the soul rooted in cultural and spiritual values.
