The 2026 Indonesian Heritage Parade: Strategic Steps to Preserve Living Monuments in the Borobudur Temple World Heritage Area
The Indonesian Ministry of Culture held the 2026 Nusantara Heritage Parade at the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park in Magelang, Central Java, on Friday, April 17, 042026. The Nusantara Heritage Parade, attended by approximately 1.000 participants, involved cultural communities and residents from 20 villages in the Borobudur Temple area. Indonesian Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, emphasized that Borobudur's power lies not only in its magnificent temple. Furthermore, Borobudur is also rich in traditional heritage, noble values, rituals, art, customs, and collective memory still preserved by the community.
"The 2026 Nusantara Heritage Parade is concrete proof that Borobudur is a living heritage. Religious and cultural activities are an integral part of Indonesian life. The Ministry of Culture hopes to hold more similar cultural events in the future," he explained.
The procession began at the Beringin Gate of Borobudur Temple Tourism Park, followed by a cultural parade carrying heirlooms to the main courtyard of Borobudur Temple. The series of activities included interfaith prayers and cultural rituals. Additionally, there was the presentation of conservation seedlings as a symbol of the ongoing preservation of the environment and culture.
The handover of these conservation seeds served as an important symbol for the sustainability of environmental and cultural preservation. The event concluded with a feast or communal meal (Bojono spring), which reflects the values of togetherness and harmony. This activity strengthens social bonds between participants and the community.
This event was held for the first time in the Borobudur Temple area, involving all stakeholders. The active participation of the buffer village communities demonstrated their vital role in maintaining the continuity of cultural values. This activity reflected the synergy between the government and local communities.
The Ministry of Culture hopes that the Kirab Pusaka Nusantara (Indonesian Heritage Parade) will raise public awareness of the importance of cultural preservation. Furthermore, this activity is expected to strengthen Borobudur's position as a global cultural destination. Borobudur is expected to become more well-known and welcoming to all groups, including those with disabilities and the elderly.
