Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Yogyakarta Earthquake, InJourney Destination Management and the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture Train 1.000 High School Students in Yogyakarta to Create a Resilient and Sustainable Community

Deputy for Disaster Management and Social Conflict Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) of the Republic of Indonesia Lilik Kurniawan, Assistant Deputy for Disaster Risk Reduction of the Coordinating Ministry for PMK Andre Notohamijoyo accompanied by Director of Operations of InJourney Destination Management Indung Purwita Jati directly opened the disaster simulation activity at SMA I Kalasan, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Friday (22/5/2026). 

The Kita Tangguh program is part of a series of events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Yogyakarta earthquake. This commemoration emphasizes cross-sector collaboration to build a culture of disaster awareness and strengthen community capacity to respond to emergencies, while enhancing community preparedness for disaster risks.

"The two-decade anniversary of the Yogyakarta earthquake serves as an important reminder of the significant disaster risks facing the Yogyakarta region and various regions across Indonesia. In addition to providing a space for reflection on the 2006 earthquake, which left a significant impact on the community, this momentum is also intended as a means of public education to build collective memory and strengthen preparedness for potential future disasters," explained Lilik Kurniawan. 

InJourney Destination Management conducted disaster response training for 1.000 high school students in Sleman, Bantul, Yogyakarta, and Gunungkidul Regencies. The InJourney Community Care program, which ran from January to May 2026, featured a series of intensive materials covering the mitigation spectrum, including understanding the risks of potential earthquakes, rescue techniques, evacuations, and emergency response simulations.

Director of Operations InJourney Destination Management Indung Purwita Jati stated that the company's involvement in this commemoration is part of its commitment to presenting destinations that are not only oriented towards tourism, but also have educational value, sustainability, and community resilience. 

"Tourist destinations play a strategic role as public education spaces, including in building awareness of disaster mitigation. Through collaboration with various parties, we aim to foster a more resilient community, especially the younger generation, so they have a better understanding of preparedness and are able to participate in disaster risk reduction efforts in their surrounding areas," he said.

Deputy Principal of Kalasan 1 High School, Aris Widaryanti, said that SMAN 1 Kalasan was severely affected. During the period recovery During teaching and learning activities at school, there were remnants of fear on the faces of students and teachers because of the fact that an earthquake is a disaster that is certain to threaten Kalasan.  

Learning from the disaster, the school recognizes the importance of disaster awareness. The younger generation needs to train themselves to be resilient in the face of any potential disaster. This commitment is demonstrated, among other things, by using earthquake-resistant school buildings. SMAN 1 Kalasan prioritizes disaster preparedness and response for the school community.

"Disaster response training is very important to promote, so that we can be like countries like New Zealand and Japan, which already have mitigation measures in place for every disaster, such as an earthquake," he explained.

The 20th Anniversary Commemoration of the Yogyakarta Earthquake is expected to lead to the development of more comprehensive disaster risk reduction policy recommendations, increased cross-sectoral coordination and commitment in disaster preparedness, increased public understanding of disaster risks and mitigation measures, and broader dissemination of disaster management capacity and equipment readiness. 

"This momentum also serves as a reminder that the spirit of mutual cooperation and collaboration is the main foundation for building a more resilient Indonesia in the face of disasters," he concluded.
