Starting with the Monk's Holy Journey

The series of Vesak celebrations at Borobudur began with a walk by monks, known as the Indonesia Walk for Peace (IWFP). There was something different about the monks' walk in 2026. For Vesak 2570 BE/2026, the walk by monks from various Southeast Asian countries did not begin in Jakarta, as in previous years, but rather in Bali and ended in Borobudur.

The monks' journey from Bali to Borobudur Temple is estimated to be 666 km, starting from Brahmavihara-Arama, Buleleng, Bali on May 9, 2026. During the journey, people from various regions are allowed to welcome the monks through cultural processions, joint prayers, and social activities.

One of the lessons to be learned from this monk's journey is the simplicity of life. This is evident in the monks carrying only the bare necessities for the journey. This ritual also teaches patience, harmony, and mental resilience, and symbolizes the human journey in search of peace and wisdom. 

The monks will arrive on May 28, 2026 at the Borobudur Temple area, and the welcoming procession will be held on May 30, 2026 at 08:00 am. 

The Sacred Vesak Ceremonial Procession

The series of ceremonies for the Trisuci Vesak holiday begins at San Bu Yi Bai at 03:30 a.m., followed by a cultural parade to Borobudur Temple at 12:00 p.m. 

Prayers and meditations for the Vesak Day of 2026 were held at 15:44 WIB, followed by prayers and pradaksina until the release of the Peace Lantern session I at 18:00. 

Dharmasanti or the Vesak ceremony for 2570 BE in 2026 will begin at 19:30 until the release of the peace lantern session II.

Peace in the Release of Lanterns

One moment eagerly awaited by the public during the Vesak celebrations at Borobudur is the Night of the Lanterns, or the Release of the Peace Lanterns. This night, filled with prayer and hope for a more peaceful world, unfolds in a serene and magical atmosphere as thousands of lanterns begin to fly. 

However, this celebration is not simply about releasing lanterns into the sky; each light that flies through the sky holds a profound spiritual meaning. In Buddhist teachings, these lights symbolize the illumination of the inner darkness of humankind, caused by greed, ignorance, and anger.

Currently, lantern flights are a magnet that attracts local and foreign tourists to visit Borobudur Temple and are held in two sessions, namely at 18.00 WIB and 22.00 WIB.

Warmth in Sunrise Pradaksina and Meditation

Not ending with the Lantern Flight, before sunrise on June 1, 2026, visitors can start the day by following the Maha Kuthagara Pradaksina series above Borobudur Temple. 

This journey is inspired by the story of Sudhana in seeking enlightenment by circling the mandala of the Vairocanavyuhalamkaragarbha Kutagara (abode of the peaceful ones).

During the Sunrise Pradaksina, participants will be invited to walk around Borobudur Temple clockwise as the sun rises. This is followed by meditation. singing bowland Chanting together. This aims to free oneself from inner conflict, towards calm and peace.

The Crowds of the Medang Waisak Market

To support visitors attending the various Vesak events at Borobudur, a traditional market area is located at Pasar Medang Borobudur. Pasar Medang offers a variety of culinary offerings from vendors from the Borobudur Art Village and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from Central Java and Yogyakarta.

Visitors can also enjoy cultural performances and various souvenirs made by Borobudur vendors. Medang Market will operate from May 29–30, 2026, in the Borobudur Temple area.
