Tens of Thousands of Runners Enliven the 2026 Mandiri Jogja Marathon in the Prambanan Temple Area
A total of 10.200 runners from 17 countries participated in the 2026 Mandiri Jogja Marathon (MJM) "More Than a Race" at Prambanan Temple Tourism Park on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The international running event, first held in 2017, successfully strengthened sports tourism and boosted regional economic growth in Indonesia.
The 2026 Mandiri Jogja Marathon features four categories: Marathon (42,195 kilometers), Half Marathon (21,097 kilometers), 10K, and 5K Fun Run. Participants will run past several cultural heritage sites, such as Prambanan Temple, Sewu Temple, Lumbung Temple, and Bubrah Temple, as well as pristine and well-preserved rural areas.
MJM 2026 will deliver broader economic, environmental, social, and cultural benefits in Yogyakarta. Embracing the "More Than a Race" spirit, MJM will strengthen community economic empowerment through a digital financial literacy program for MSMEs in the surrounding area to encourage the adoption of digital transactions and increase business capacity.
This effort is presented through the Mandiri LAKU LOKAL (mLaku Lokal) program at Race Village in the Prambanan Temple area which presents 27 local brands and 70 MSME tenants, as well as the holding of the MSME Festival which involves around 60 MSME actors domiciled around Prambanan Temple.
This sport tourism event combines an international-standard running competition with tourism experiences, cultural celebrations, and trips through areas around Yogyakarta, all while having a social impact.
Through an approach that integrates sport, culture, sustainability and economic empowerment, MJM is expected to continue to be sports tourism benchmark nationally while providing wider benefits to the community.
Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir stated that organizing sports tourism events like the Mandiri Jogja Marathon is one way to improve regional tourism rankings. In addition to promoting tourism based on culture and natural beauty, the implementation of sports tourism events is also necessary.
"So, this event is very positive. And I believe sports tourism not only keeps our society healthy but also contributes to economic growth, which the President is currently pushing hard for. That's why we need to develop new economic sectors, one of which is sports tourism like this," he concluded.
