Borobudur Sunrise: InJourney Presents an Unforgettable Sunrise Experience for Travelers
InJourney Destination Management, through its subsidiary, PT Taman Wisata Borobudur (PT TWB), has officially opened access to Borobudur Sunrise and to climb the Borobudur Temple structure daily for regular tourists and students. This policy is part of a strategy to strengthen sustainable and inclusive heritage-based tourism experiences, while also supporting economic growth in the region through quality tourism initiatives.
The reactivation of the Borobudur Sunrise and the daily temple tours are being carried out in coordination with relevant parties, including the Museum and Cultural Heritage of the Indonesian Ministry of Culture, the Magelang Regency Government, the Indonesian Tourism Association (ASITA), and other tourism stakeholders. This approach ensures that every management step is carried out within the framework of regulations, conservation principles, and sustainable tourism ethics.
InJourney Destination Management President Director Febrina Intan stated that the opening of Borobudur Sunrise access and daily temple tours is a response to the high enthusiasm of tourists globally. The program, which is still in the trial phase, will continue to be evaluated periodically with the involvement of various parties. Borobudur Sunrise is expected to be part of an effort to expand the meaningful experience of visiting the world cultural heritage of Borobudur Temple.
"We want to provide a broader opportunity for the public to experience a more meaningful experience through the Borobudur Sunrise program and tours up the temple structure. Besides being a major attraction, this also strengthens our preservation mission through a more intimate and substantive approach. We hope this will have a multiplier effect on MSMEs and tourism activists in the area," he explained.
The reactivation of sunrise access to Borobudur Temple represents a concrete effort to integrate conservation with comprehensive tourism development. Management will assess the physical impact, visitor perceptions, and public feedback before establishing a regular schedule. Everything is data-driven and conservation-based. Pricing, including pricing, is part of a control mechanism to ensure a high-quality experience and support conservation efforts.
Borobudur Sunrise offers a unique experience watching the sunrise from the summit of Borobudur Temple. The sight of the sun rising with its red-orange hue on the eastern horizon, accompanied by the silhouettes of Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu, is a breathtaking, contemplative experience. Borobudur Sunrise had become an iconic tourist attraction, popular with tourists, especially international tourists, even before the pandemic.
"This sunrise viewing activity, which has been suspended since 2020, is a strategic step by the company to bring back one of the most anticipated tourist attractions, with a more curated, limited, and special approach, based on the principle of preserving cultural heritage," he continued.
Previously, visits to Borobudur Temple were scheduled for general tourists on Tuesdays through Sundays, and specifically for school students on Mondays. Now, visits to Borobudur Temple for students and the general public are available daily.
Visitors to Borobudur Sunrise will arrive through the Borobudur Unit Office, entering Gate 7 of the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park at 4:00 a.m. WIB. Visitors will receive a number of special items, including wristbands , flashlights, a religious offering (upanat), a tour guide, souvenirs , and breakfast vouchers.
At 5:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, tourists can enjoy a panoramic sunrise from the 9th floor of Borobudur Temple. Afterward, they're invited to enjoy breakfast at Dagi Hill. Enjoying delicious, authentic local cuisine while enjoying views of Borobudur Temple and the Menoreh Hills in the distance makes for an unforgettable morning.
Borobudur Sunrise ticket reservations can be made via WhatsApp +62 857 2758 7800 with a ticket price of one million rupiah for foreign and domestic tourists with a maximum quota of 100 people per day.
Visitors are still required to wear a protective mask to reduce direct friction on the temple's stone structure. Management also regulates circulation to prevent excessive pressure on vulnerable areas.
" Borobudur Sunrise , which has become a global attraction, is presented through a series of studies and the preparation of a more structured visit plan. This experience is being revived gradually with limited quotas and strict supervision, to ensure the sustainability and preservation of the temple structure," he continued.
This program is expected to stimulate the local culture-based economy. Through locally-based service connectivity, supported by the surrounding MSME ecosystem, this sunrise tourism will become a driving force for the creative economy in the Borobudur area.
"We're trying to revive Borobudur as a tourism destination with a strong brand. We're opening access to students not only on Mondays, but every day. We hope this will encourage an increase in student tourism, so we can return to our former glory. Students represent a large, potential market for MSMEs in the Borobudur Art Village," he explained.
