The Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting (ITC) is a sacred event featuring mass recitations of Buddhist texts in Pali. The event is centered at Borobudur Temple and coincides with the commemoration of Asalha Mahapuja.
Through this event, Borobudur Temple is once again present not just as a tourist attraction, but as a living spiritual space, a place where ancestral teachings are lived, people submit themselves in silence, and it becomes a symbol of tolerance and peace between religious communities.
The ITC brings together monks and laypeople for three days. Each year, portions of the 84.000 sacred teachings are recited and studied. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. Each year, the event involves up to 2.020 Tipitaka members from various countries, with 12.500 participants participating in the processions and ceremonial rituals.
The Indonesian Tipitaka Chanting at Borobudur Temple was first held in 2015 and has since become an annual event. This event marks a historic moment, as Indonesian Buddhists gather in the Borobudur Temple courtyard to recite the Tipitaka scriptures over several days.
During this event, participants can view the Sacred Golden Chariots on display in the Borobudur Temple area: Mahadhatu, Tipitaka, Dhammacakka, and Stambha Vijaya. These chariots are not mere decorations but spiritual symbols that convey the essence of Buddhist teachings and the sacred presence of Buddha. The Sacred Golden Chariots can be seen until August 18 2026.

Day 1 – July 24, 2026:
- Opening ceremony (opening ceremony).
- Opening of Tipika Chanting.
- Reading of the Tipitaka Scriptures.
Day 2 – July 25, 2026:
- Reading of the Tipitaka Holy Book.
- Dhamma Talk.
- Meditation together.
Day 3 – July 26, 2026:
- Closing of Tipitaka Chanting.
- Asalha Mahapuja.

The Bhikkhus' Devotion Journey from Mendut to Borobudur
The highlight of the event on July 26, 2026, began with a Puja Journey beginning at 1:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple. This procession was accompanied by four Golden Chariots, not only enhancing its sacredness but also symbolizing the sacred presence of Buddha.
This was followed by the Asadha Great Service Puja held in Lumbini Park, Borobudur Temple, from 4:00 PM WIB until finished. The procession concluded with the Asalha Mahapuja by the monks and devotees.
Asalha Mahapuja – When the series of ceremonies reached its peak, the monks and the congregation performed Pradaksina, which is walking together around Borobudur Temple three times as a form of respect for Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha.
Accompanied by the majestic silhouette of Borobudur Temple at night, this moment evokes a solemnity and devotion rarely witnessed in person. Besides serving as a means of spiritual reflection for Buddhists, this activity also reinforces the message of peace, tolerance, and social harmony in community life.
