Borobudur Vesak Visitor Statistics 2025
The Vesak celebration of 2569 BE/2025 drove a surge in visitors to Borobudur Temple , Magelang, Central Java. PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (Persero) or InJourney as the manager of Borobudur Temple through its subsidiary, InJourney Destination Management (IDM) recorded a total of 100 thousand people visiting Borobudur during the period of May 1 to 13, 2025. This figure represents the total number of visits from both regular visitors and Buddhists who participated in the Vesak celebration and also supporters of the event.
This year's Waisak series is also different from usual, not only decorated with 2.569 lanterns but also 450 drones that make the Borobudur sky even more beautiful and magical that night. The highest number of visits was recorded at the peak of the Waisak celebration on May 12, 2025, which recorded 45.914 visitors, both Buddhists who worship, tourists, and also supporters of the event. This figure grew 25% compared to the peak of last year's Waisak celebration which recorded 36 thousand visitors.

The high enthusiasm of the community to visit Borobudur Temple during Waisak also encouraged an increase in the occupancy rate of hotels and homestays both around Borobudur Temple and nearby cities such as Yogyakarta. The Head of the Borobudur Homestay Village Association, Muslih, as reported by from Sudut Jogja, said that a total of 152 homestay rooms in his village were fully booked a month before Waisak. Room reservations had started since February and peaked in April. Around 200 prospective guests who were unable to get a room were directed to other homestays in the Borobudur District area which has around 400 units and 800-1.000 rooms.
The 2025 Waisak long holiday also boosted the number of air passengers. PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia or InJourney Airports recorded an increase in the number of passengers at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). In terms of aircraft movements, during the long Waisak holiday there was a 14,71% increase to 421 flights, from the previous week's 367 flights. Meanwhile, the accumulation of passengers during the long Waisak holiday increased by 32,35% to 59.787 passengers, compared to the previous week's 45.175 passengers.
The increase in occupancy and also the increase in flights during the long Waisak holiday will have a major economic impact. The multiplier effect of the implementation of Waisak is even greater because InJourney involves MSMEs and also local workers to make the implementation of the 2025 Waisak celebration a success.
