The legend of Bandung Bondowoso and Roro Jonggrang, which ended tragically, is very popular in Java. This legend is closely linked to the formation of Prambanan Temple and the founding of Ratu Boko Palace.

It is said that Ratu Boko Palace is believed to be the palace of Roro Jonggrang and Prabu Boko. Meanwhile, Prambanan Temple is believed to have been built by Bandung Bondowoso in a single night with the help of jinns.

So, how did the story of Bandung Bondowoso and Roro Jonggrang begin? Long story short, while on his way to the Prambanan area, he met the beautiful Roro Jonggrang. It could be said that Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with the princess at first sight.

Initially, Roro Jonggrang felt the same way. When she met Bandung Bondowoso, his handsome face captivated her. Undeniably, Roro Jonggrang also fell in love with Bandung Bondowoso.

However, when Bandung Bondowoso had confirmed his choice and proposed to Roro Jonggrang, the princess rejected him. Why did this happen if they had fallen in love with each other?

Why Did Roro Jonggrang Reject Bandung Bondowoso?

Although initially captivated by Bandung Bondowoso's handsomeness, Roro Jonggrang decided to reject the young man. Not without reason, she already knew that Bandung Bondowoso had defeated and killed her beloved father. 

Instead of growing in love, Roro Jonggrang hated Bandung Bondowoso deeply after learning this fact. This was the reason why Roro Jonggrang rejected him.

Roro Jonggrang's Strategy to Reject Bandung Bondowoso

Although she had already decided to reject Bandung Bondowoso, Roro Jonggrang politely conveyed her rejection. She set a condition for Bandung Bondowoso to marry her: he must build a sacred well and a thousand temples in one night.

Bandung Bondowoso accepted the terms. He then enlisted the help of an army of thousands of spirits, making it possible to complete a thousand temples in one night.

Throughout the night, one by one, the temples began to rise, reaching nearly a thousand before dawn. Seeing this, Roro Jonggrang was overcome with anxiety and constantly devised a strategy to thwart the demands.

Roro Jonggrang then ordered her court ladies to pound mortars to create a loud noise and ordered her guards to burn straw on the east side of Prambanan. This strategy successfully created an atmosphere as if dawn had arrived, and the sound of a rooster crowing could be heard.

Bandung Bondowoso's army of spirits, hearing the rooster's crow, were immediately frightened and fled. However, they were only one temple short of the thousand Roro Jonggrang had requested. Bandung Bondowoso failed to fulfill the princess's request.

Sensing something was amiss, Bandung Bondowoso tried to investigate until he finally realized that the rooster's crowing, which had driven away his army of spirits, was a ploy by Roro Jonggrang. This infuriated him.

Rejection Leads to a Curse

When the sun really began to show its rays, Roro Jonggrang met Bandung Bondowoso, "Because you can't fulfill my requirement to build a thousand temples in one night, I won't marry you," said Roro Jonggrang.

"If you were going to reject me, you should have been honest from the start. Why resort to such a scheme?" Bandung Bondowoso retorted, his anger still lingering. He then uttered a curse, "To complete this thousand temples, you will be the one turned into stone!"
