Vesak in Borobudur: A Deeply Meaningful Spiritual Experience

Vesak in Borobudur is a highly anticipated event every year, not only for Buddhists but also for the general public. This celebration draws the attention of both domestic and international tourists. To this day, the lantern release night, or the flying of the lanterns of peace, remains the most awaited moment in this series of celebrations. However, did you know that the Vesak celebration at Borobudur also offers a variety of other experiences?

Yup, you can enjoy the liveliness of the folk market, various cultural performances, and even a walking meditation atop the temple during the Sunrise Pradaksina. Read on for the full details.

Started with the Holy Journey of the Monks

The Vesak celebration series in Borobudur begins with the monks’ pilgrimage, also known as the Indonesia Walk For Peace (IWFP). There is something different about the monks’ walking ritual in 2026. For the 2570 BE/2026 Vesak celebration, the foot pilgrimage of monks from various Southeast Asian countries did not start in Jakarta as in previous years, but instead commenced in Bali and will end at Borobudur.

The travel distance from Bali to Borobudur Temple was estimated to reach 666 km, starting from Brahmavihara-Arama, Buleleng, Bali, on May 9th, 2026. Along the journey, people from various regions welcomed the monks with cultural parades, joint prayers, and social activities.

One lesson to be drawn from this monk’s journey is the simplicity of life. This is evident in the monks’ carrying only essential equipment throughout their travels. This ritual also teaches patience, harmony, and mental endurance, while symbolizing the human journey in search of peace and wisdom.

The Bhikkhus arrived at the Borobudur Temple area on May 28th, 2026, and the welcoming procession will be held on May 30th, 2026, at 08:00 AM.

The Sacred Ceremonial Procession of Vesak

The series of ceremonies on the holy day of Trisuci Vesak begins with San Bu Yi Bai at 03:30 AM. This is followed by the Cultural Parade Carnival toward Borobudur Temple at 12:00 PM.

The prayers and meditation for the exact peak moments of Vesak 2026 will be held at 03:44 PM, followed by prayers and pradaksina leading up to Session I of the Peace Lantern Release at 6:00 PM.

Dharmasanti, or the Vesak 2570 BE ceremonial event for the year 2026, will begin at 7:30 PM and run until just before Session II of the peace lantern release.

Peace in the Lantern Release

The single most awaited moment by the wider public in the series of Vesak celebrations in Borobudur is the Lantern Night, or the Release of the Lanterns of Peace. This night, filled with prayers and hopes for a more peaceful world, unfolds in a calm, magical atmosphere as thousands of lanterns begin to fly.

However, this celebration is not merely about launching lanterns into the sky; it carries a deep spiritual meaning within each floating light. In Buddhist teachings, the light symbolizes illumination over the darkness of the human mind, clearing away greed, ignorance, and anger.

Currently, the lantern-flying event serves as a major magnet for local and foreign tourists visiting Borobudur Temple, and it is held in two sessions: at 06:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

Rest assured, this lantern-release moment is not limited to participants who launch them directly. You can also watch it up close or from the grandstand area for a better visual vantage point

Warmth in the Sunrise Pradaksina and Meditation

The experience does not end with the lantern flying because just before sunrise on June 1st, 2026, visitors can start the day by participating in the Maha Kuthagara Pradaksina series atop Borobudur Temple.

This journey is inspired by the story of Sudhana in his quest for enlightenment by circumambulating the mandala structure of the Vairocanavyuhalamkaragarbha Kutagara (the dwelling of the peaceful ones).

During the Sunrise Pradaksina, participants will be guided to walk clockwise around Borobudur Temple as the sun rises. Then, the activity continues with meditation, singing bowls, and chanting together. This aims to free oneself from internal conflict, moving toward tranquility and peace.

The Bustle of the Medang Vesak Market

To support visitors participating in the various Vesak events at Borobudur, a folk market area is available at the Medang Borobudur Market. At Medang Market, there are various culinary offerings, ranging from vendors from the Borobudur Art Village to MSMEs from across Central Java and Yogyakarta.

In addition, visitors can also enjoy cultural performances and browse a variety of souvenirs crafted by vendors at Borobudur. The Medang Market will be open from May 29th–30th, 2026, in the Borobudur Temple complex.

Lumbini Park Social Service

As a gesture of compassion and as part of the journey toward the holy days of Vesak, various Social Service activities were held in the Lumbini Park area of Borobudur Temple from May 24 to 25th, 2026.

If you want to experience the sacredness of Vesak in Borobudur firsthand, from the grandeur of the procession to the moment thousands of released lanterns light up the night sky, this event is an opportunity that is simply too good to miss.

The Vesak celebration at Borobudur offers not only a beautiful sight but also an experience that is hard to capture in photos or videos alone.
